Sandakan Symposium District Level 2013

What is happening  ?

The Sandakan teachers under the ELTDP British Council had organised a Symposium for Sandakan District level on the 29th August 2013 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kg. Bahagia Sandakan . This idea came from a friend of mine Noor Aini Hussin  and me  who had attended myself  to the British Council Symposium Kuching  on the  20 - 23 February 2013 in Sarawak  .

Dream comes True .

Our   dream comes true where it has been successfully done .  I would like to say THANK YOU  and  congratulate  my working team , the presenters , volunteers , our mentor from the British Council Breena Cheers and not to forget our PPD Sandakan and JPNS for their financial support and encouragement .

What is a Symposium   ?

I would define the word as " a gathering event  for the purpose of seeking and sharing knowledge "
This is the first Symposium for the East Sabah and three  teachers from the mentoring project namely Rosidah Abu Bakar , Stefanie K. Nirmal and Freddy Graman took the challenge with the helped of a mentor Breena Cheers .  Trisha Thorlby from  the  British Council  Management of the Symposium Kuching in Sarawak  has beautifully define  Sympoisum as a 'Celebration ' a  place to celebrate the teachers' achievement  .

How does it work   ?

This programme was designed to encourage teachers to be a 'Reseacher ' on his or her classroom or school project .  It helps teachers in building his or her teaching development through the reflective teaching process .  The theme for the Sandakan Symposium 2013 is about " EMPOWERING TEACHERS THROUGH RESEARCH  "  Project teachers who has done their classroom research  would come forward to inspire other teachers to discover  their hidden potential through  the  sharing .
At the same time , the purpose of the Symposium is to share the teachers success story through their research project  in school  .

Who are the people involved    ?

This Symposium has created a great opportunity for every individuals who are willing to take the challenges .  The people involved are those mainly from  the mentoring project under the ELTDP . We get the cooperation from the PPD Sandakan under the DTP ( District Transformation Programme ) responsible by En. Ali Rahman the Language officer and Pn. Nurul Syafiqah the Fasi Linus officer .
This programme will not be a legend without the help from the volunteers , the non project member .
JPN Sabah has also contributed their role in providing us the fund under the DTP which is the most important element to run any project programme .  Individuals from the British Council Trisha Thorlby and our Principal Assistant Director ( English Language Unit ) Mr. Mohd Fadzli Rozan  has kindly give   their  moral support through writing in  the Forward Message   of   the programme book .
Not to forget the audience which came from the schools all over Sandakan district  .
This event was so blessed to have the Beluran district teachers and some head teachers to join and celebrate the good news together .

The participants

There are about 126 participants consist of teachers, head teachers , officers from PPD Sandakan , SISC+ and SIP officers .

What is in the programme  ?

It is a one day event and this Symposium caters 7 Research project presentation and some Educational Exhibition from the Sandakan   teachers  .

THE ATTITUDE IN YOU

Dealing with  hyper active cum  slow learner kids is always a teacher's  nightmare . They are not listening aren't they ..?  If they do sit back and listen they are not comprehending aren't they .. ? At the end of the lesson students are not able to achieve the respective skills given and the kids are still  HAPPY but are you HAPPY ?

Some  teachers may blame the students' social background for being such a brat and stupid . Some would  care and take their action and some would just put it on the blames .

How about making some changes from typical traditional classroom method to something more fun and  enjoyable lesson ? As for my personal observation not many teachers would really take this challenge into their teaching world . Some are enjoying their comfort zone more  where  only salary and position that matters . It's really a heart breaking phenomena where education really counts in .

As an individual and educator what matters the most is the ATTITUDE . It all depends on how we define and build ourselves as a person . Are we willing to take a Chance  ? Are we willing to make a Choice ? And lastly.. are we willing to make a Change to ourselves..? The answer lies in YOU .

What to Change ?

Some teachers do believe that they have enough experiences through out their teaching years and from what they have learned in the teacher's  training college would be enough. This is a feedback that I got from my workmate and I would respect her name to be anonymous . As we all know that Learning is a life time process . As we teach we learned at the same time . So from the learning we are identifying the problems and how to overcome the challenges in teaching .  Do we stick to the same method or do we need  new strategies to make the learning more meaningful and fun .. ? And how do we do that ? What should we do ? Well .. just take  an ATTITUDE to make a positive change in you then create a chance to make it happen and accept changes by learning new things .

How to Change ?

We have many choice to choose and it should be chosen wisely . We can always learned from other teachers  for  new method or strategies , mentors advice or guidance ( if any ) , supporting groups from the social website such as the ELTDP group online , The Symposium British Council group online .. The British Council website , books , journals  and other websites related, Youtube  so  there is no excuse for not knowing how to look for help  for it is  exposed  widely . So once again .. it's all on YOU to make your choice .

Challenges that teachers probably met :

Most teachers just do not know how to start , where to start and when to start. It is all about doing a reflective classroom research. Most teaching materials are not graded  to suit  students' level of proficiency and some teachers are not aware of it . Lack of good resource and materials for teaching is also one of the challenges that teachers met . In Sabah itself we could hardly find good graded books and teaching materials that can  suit the students need.  The Teacher's training college mostly advice teachers to do simplification to their teaching materials or resource . Some simplification might work on certain things but some might not specially in reading materials such as Story books. You might missed out some of the important ingredients in the story element which will cause a lost to the students knowledge .
The most fearful challenges that teachers often have is to learn new method and to try things out . Maybe because they are afraid of the risk .. the failure .. the blames .. the rejection by other teachers or maybe they afraid that the students could not get into the new teaching ways . The worst thing is some teachers may have an ATTITUDE of do not want to do it because it will cause a lot of preparation and hard work .

Once again it's  all   about     The ATTITUDE  IN  YOU ..

The Very Hungry Caterpillar begins its journey..

The hungry caterpillar begins its journey in Year 1 Fikrah ( 2012 )..the noisiest class with low ability students.
The 37 students always have difficulties in remembering the Days of the week. Whenever I ask them question it is always a Monday to them...it sounds very cute and funny but it also makes my temperature goes up..haha..

To fix this problem i have come up with a method using a story book to catch their attention  and at the same time they learn vocabulary and sight words in the story as it goes along. I called  this research project " Using Shared Reading with Year 1 Students."  CLICK THE LINK BELOW for presentation...:)

Hello..I'm BACK!!

It has been a while since my last post..too many things come up in life..Sad..hurts..happy..frustration..depression ( almost .. ) haha..Life is indeed like a roller coaster.

Been busy preparing my ELTDP Project in school. I have done  a research on Shared Reading with my Year 1 students. My mentor Breena Cheers has been my backbone in making this school project done completely. The project was born when I have difficulties in making my Year 1 students learned about Days of the week. I'm not happy with their respond which everyday is always a  MONDAY to them..Then I have decided to come up with something new in my teaching method. Something that is fun but meaningful. Since Me and Stefanie my workmate are in the Power of Reading project in school so I have decided to use Story Books in my teaching and learning strategy.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle  is my best pick of  book to begin my journey.
